The Spirit of the Rain: Celebrating World Gin Day with Cherrapunji Gin
Every year, on the second Saturday of June, the world unites to raise a glass to one of the most versatile and storied spirits in existence: World Gin Day. While the global community toasts with everything from London Dry to contemporary distillates, there is a specific, rain-kissed corner of Northeast India that is redefining what a gin can be.
This World Gin Day, we invite you to look beyond the ordinary and journey to Meghalaya—the "abode of clouds"—where the team at ZARF Spirits is bringing you the soul of India’s most enigmatic landscape in a bottle: Cherrapunji Gin.
A Genesis in the Rainiest Place on Earth
Cherrapunji, alongside its sister town Mawsynram, holds the distinction of being the rainiest place on Earth, receiving over 22,000 mm of rain annually. It is here that the founders found their "eureka" moment.
Distillation is a water-intensive process. Most spirit brands rely on groundwater, but Cherrapunji Gin turns to the sky. By harvesting and purifying rainwater, the brand not only creates a uniquely pure spirit but also reduces energy consumption by 70%, embodying a deep-seated commitment to sustainability.
What is World Gin Day?
World Gin Day is a jubilant, annual tribute to the rich history, diverse flavours, and cultural significance of the juniper-flavoured spirit. It is a day dedicated to honouring the producers who craft this botanical masterpiece and the mixologists who create wonderful cocktails with it.
Beyond the enjoyment of the drink itself, the day fosters community, camaraderie, and a shared appreciation for the finer things in life. Whether enjoyed in a classic G&T, a sophisticated Martini, or neat, the day provides a global platform for bars and brands to engage with the gin-loving public.
The History of World Gin Day
The story of World Gin Day began in 2009 in Birmingham, UK. It was founded by gin enthusiast Neil Houston, who simply wanted a reason to bring his friends together to drink and celebrate the spirit.
In 2010, Neil joined forces with Emma Stokes—widely known as "Gin Monkey"—to bring the celebration to a small gin bar in London. Since 2013, Emma has taken the lead, guiding the occasion to new heights and evolving it into a truly global celebration. Today, the event unites over 200 million gin lovers across more than 30 countries on social media alone.
The Art of the Botanical Fusion
What makes Cherrapunji Gin truly "designer" is its complex botanical architecture. It isn't just about juniper; it is about telling the story of Northeast India’s biodiversity. The gin features a fusion of 12 regional botanicals, including:
-
Khasi Mandarin: GI-tagged and celebrated for its sweet-tangy profile.
-
Kaji Nemu: The fragrant lemon of Assam that provides a bright citrus lift.
-
Sohmarit: Wild peppers from the forests of Meghalaya that add a subtle, spicy depth.
-
Smoked Tea: Sourced from Tripura, it imparts a delicate bitterness and a grounding, earthy warmth.
-
Himalayan Juniper: Specifically sourced from Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.
